Frequently asked questions

How do I get started?

Click the VisualMark extension icon to save the current page or open the Bookmark Manager. Your existing browser folders and bookmarks are used; you do not need to recreate them. Switch between Thumbnail, List and Carousel views, or open the side panel to keep bookmarks beside your browsing.

How do I replay the product tour?

In the Bookmark Manager, open About → Overview and choose the option to show the tour again.

Why is a preview missing or out of date?

Previews are cached images, not live websites. Choose Refresh screenshot from a bookmark’s context menu to update one, or select several bookmarks to refresh them together. Check website access and capture settings if an image is missing. Login screens, protected pages, slow images and browser restrictions can prevent a useful capture.

Can I capture previews without the debugger permission?

Yes, in a build without background capture, VisualMark can offer to open a page in the foreground, capture the visible area, close it and return to the manager. Tabs will change during this process and website access may be requested. It is not equivalent to a background or full-page capture. Saving the current page can also capture its visible area after you invoke the extension.

Can I enable background capture later?

Check About → Data → Permissions to see what your installed build requests and what has been granted. Website access can be requested when you use a feature that needs it. The debugger permission is included in capture-enabled builds, not an optional permission in the current manifest. A no-debug build cannot add it through a permission popup; switching to a capture-enabled build is required. Back up your VisualMark data before removing or replacing an installation.

What happens if I decline website access?

You can still organise browser bookmarks and use saved notes, tags and cached previews. Features that need to read or capture a website may be unavailable or limited until access is granted. Existing cached images do not need to be recaptured just to view them.

Why is a working website marked as a broken link?

A failed page load, a not-found response or an error page can trigger a broken-link flag. Some websites reject automated requests, require a login or temporarily fail. Open the link yourself to confirm it, then retry the refresh. If the flag remains incorrect, report the affected URL and the message shown.

How do I select multiple bookmarks?

Use Ctrl-click to select individual bookmarks, Shift-click for a range, or Ctrl+A to select all displayed bookmarks when you are not typing in a text field. Bulk actions such as delete and refresh apply to the selection; single-bookmark editing actions are unavailable for multiple selections.

How do I back up or view bookmarks on my phone?

Use Export in the manager. Standard HTML keeps ordinary bookmark links; a rich VisualMark backup preserves additional saved information and available previews. Portable viewing creates a single HTML file with a simplified folder tree and previews. Smaller thumbnail options reduce file size. Exports can contain private URLs, notes and images: share them carefully.

Does VisualMark sync all its data between devices?

Browser bookmark sync is controlled by your browser. Do not assume cached screenshots and VisualMark’s extra information follow that sync. Use a rich backup to preserve those details when moving installations.

Why are some search layouts unavailable?

Google’s multi-panel formatting is intended for supported result types, such as All, News, Videos and Forums. Image and other specialised searches retain the search engine’s own layout. Search engines can change their pages; report a layout that stops working.

Are offers based on my bookmarks?

No. Offers are selected by the category you choose and their country eligibility, not your bookmark collection. Availability depends on the installed build and published offers. Demonstration offers are fictional and cannot be redeemed. Prices retain the currency stated on the offer; location does not automatically convert them.

Where are my data and screenshots kept?

VisualMark keeps bookmark annotations, settings and cached previews in browser extension storage. Browser bookmarks remain in the browser’s bookmark system. Screenshots can include personal information visible on a page. The offers service does not receive your bookmark titles, folders, URLs, notes, tags or browsing history. See the Privacy page for country-level usage and offer interaction records.

How can I change permissions or uninstall?

Open your browser’s extension-management page and choose VisualMark’s details to review site access and available controls. You can also inspect permissions in About → Data. Restricting access may limit captures and previews. Export a rich backup before uninstalling: removing the extension can remove its locally stored notes, tags, settings and images, although ordinary browser bookmarks remain.

Permissions, explained

Permissions give the extension capabilities, not just labels. Your browser’s installation and access prompts are the authority for your installed version. The store build includes background capture; some development builds deliberately omit it.

bookmarks

Read and organise your browser bookmarks and folders, including creating, moving, editing and deleting them. Changes affect your real browser bookmarks.

storage & unlimitedStorage

Keep settings, notes, tags, reading status and cached preview images in extension storage. The larger storage allowance supports image-heavy collections; available device space still matters.

activeTab

Temporarily access the page you invoke the extension on, to save its title and URL and capture its visible preview. This is not permanent access to every tab.

favicon

Show website icons beside your saved bookmarks.

scripting

Run VisualMark’s page-reading and capture helpers on pages where website access has been granted.

debugger — background capture

Use Chrome’s debugging interface to capture screenshots of pages opened for preview generation, including longer page captures. This is a powerful permission: the interface can inspect and interact with website content. VisualMark uses it for capture, and Chrome may display a debugging notice while it is attached. Builds without this permission use foreground capture instead.

clipboardWrite

Copy links and preview images to the clipboard when you choose a copy command.

alarms & notifications

Schedule reading reminders and show reminder notifications. Your browser or operating system may also control whether notifications are displayed.

sidePanel

Display bookmarks and search tools in the browser’s side panel.

downloads — optional

Save exported bookmarks and preview-image files through browser download features when needed.

Search-engine & VisualMark website access

Enable result layouts, destination previews and the search trail on supported search engines, and communicate with the VisualMark service. This access is included for the supported sites listed in the installed build.

Additional website access — optional

Read website information and create or refresh previews for bookmarked HTTP/HTTPS pages. The browser may ask for broad website access, especially for foreground capture of pages opened by the manager. That access can expose page content to the extension, so grant it only if you are comfortable with the feature.

Still need a hand?

Email support@visualmark.app with your browser and version, VisualMark version, the steps you followed and the exact error. If a particular page fails, include its URL only if it is safe to share. A screenshot can help; hide private content first.

Never send passwords, authentication tokens, full private bookmark exports or confidential screenshots.
